Capturing Innovation at Moneypoint Power Station
I was commissioned to document a groundbreaking project at Moneypoint Power Station on Ireland’s west coast, where Siemens Energy had installed the world’s largest synchronized condenser and flywheel—a key innovation for stabilizing the grid as Ireland transitions to renewable energy.
The Challenge
Moneypoint, a decades-old fossil fuel power station, is undergoing a major transformation to support 100% renewable energy, including plans for a large offshore wind farm. A major challenge of the shoot was navigating a site where much of the infrastructure had remained unchanged since its construction 40 years ago. The synchronized condenser, the focal point of the project, was housed within a steel-clad structure covered in scaffolding—a significant obstacle not highlighted in pre-shoot discussions.
The Approach
Adapting to the unexpected conditions, we shifted focus to other visually compelling areas of the site, using strategic composition and storytelling to emphasize the innovation rather than the legacy infrastructure. Interviews with key personnel were conducted in carefully selected locations, ensuring a clean and professional backdrop. This is where having two shoot days proved invaluable, allowing time to problem-solve and capture a diverse set of high-quality visuals.
With support from Siemens Energy and Ireland’s ESB, I photographed the new flywheel site, created portraits of key personnel, and collaborated with a drone pilot to ensure we had comprehensive aerial coverage. Working alongside a Siemens communications director, we balanced photography, interviews, b-roll, and aerial footage within a tight timeframe.
The Results
The project was a resounding success. Siemens Energy was delighted with the final images and videos, which have since been used extensively across corporate communications, press releases, and internal reports. This case study highlights my ability to problem-solve in complex industrial environments while delivering impactful imagery that supports global energy transition narratives.
